The Information Day of the European Project INHERIT was successfully held

The Information Day of the European Project INHERIT was successfully held on Tuesday, October 15, 2019, at the Paleologina Mansion in Kalavryta.

Greetings on the opening of the Information Day were given by the Mayor of Kalavrita, Mr. Thanasis Papadopoulos, and the Deputy Mayor of Aigialia, Mr. Nikolaos Karaiskos. The INHERIT project and its pilot actions were then presented in detail. The project was presented by Mr. Christos Bouras, Professor of the Department of Computer Engineering & Informatics, of the University of Patras. Mr. Gregory Iatrou, Chairman of Chelmos-Vouraikos Management Body and Emeritus Professor of the Department of Biology of the University of Patras, delivered a speech on Chelmos-Vouraikos National Park and the actions of Chelmos-Vouraikos Management Body. Mr. Panagiotis Dimopoulos, Professor of the Department of Biology, of the University of Patras and Mr. Vassilios Kokkinos, Postdoctoral Researcher at the Department of Computer Engineering & Informatics and member of the INHERIT project team, also gave a speech.

The University of Patras participates in the European project INHERIT (https://inherit.interreg-med.eu/) which is implemented under the "INTERREG MED" Programme. The project involves 15 partners and 3 support partners from 10 Mediterranean countries headed by the Peloponnese Region. The project aims to protect and promote the natural heritage of Mediterranean coastal and marine tourist destinations.

Also an important objective of the project is the establishment of "INHERITURA" areas, coastal areas of the Mediterranean with a natural heritage, tourism areas, with high tourist activity, which take actions to protect and exploit the environment through bottom-up activities. For the University of Patras, the candidate area "INHERITURA" is Chelmos-Vouraikos National Park, where the pilot actions of the INHERIT project are expected to take place.

Promoting the area as an 'INHERITURA' area will bring a number of benefits such as increasing traffic to the area while simultaneously increasing recreation and food service activities, creating an added value for the owners of the area and creating branded agricultural products with the aim of generating an additional income by promoting them to the local market.

Through this Information Day, a working group was formed to prepare the application file for the designation of the Chelmos-Vouraikos National Park as 'INHERITURA' area, where the pilot activities of the INHERIT project are expected to take place.
