& the 15th Conference of the European Geoparks Network in Spain

The official representatives of Chelmos-Vouraikos UNESCO Global Geopark, Dr. George Iliopoulos, Associate Professor of the Geology Department of the University of Patras and Scientific Director of Chelmos-Vouraikos UNESCO Global Geopark, and Eleni Koumoutsou, Environmentalist and Project Coordinator of the Management Body, participated in the 44th European Geoparks Network Meeting and the 15th Conference of the European Geoparks Network, that took place in Cazalla de la Sierra (Sierra Norte de Sevilla UNESCO Global Geopark) in Spain, on September 23-28, 2019.

The meeting was attended by representatives of 73 European Geoparks. In Greece there are 5 areas (Lesvos, Psiloritis, Chelmos-Vouraikos, Vikos-Aoos, Sitia), as well as the Geopark of Cyprus (Troodos), which belong to the European Geoparks Network and as UNESCO Global Geoparks they are also UNESCO World Heritage Sites. At the meeting discussed issues common to all members of the Network, including proposals for transnational partnerships with funding projects and activities in the Geopark regions by European Programs.

Excellent organization, impeccable hospitality, high level of presentations, announcements and presentations marked the 15th Conference of the European Geoparks Network in Spain. Mr. Socrates Tsakos, Architect-Civil Engineer and External Partner of the Management Body of Chelmos-Vouraikos, presented the new labelling of the Geotopes of Chelmos-Vouraikos UNESCO Global. During the conference, we were given the opportunity to have meetings with colleagues from other Geoparks, to learn good practices and information about the management their Geoparks and learn how we can use all of this experience that has been developed in the Global Geoparks for a better presence of Chelmos-Vouraikos UNESCO Global Geopark.

In the GGN News Feed (on 23rd September 2019) it was announced, inter alia, that the evaluation of Chelmos-Vouraikos UNESCO Global Geopark, by UNESCO assessors in summer 2019, was successful, receiving a green card and remaining on the Network for the next 4 years, until the next evaluation.

The Management Body of Chelmos-Vouraikos contributes constantly to the promotion of alternative tourism, environmental education, environmental protection and promotion in the National Park area, with multiple benefits for the local community. This establishes the global recognition of Chelmos-Vouraikos National Park as a World Heritage Site with a special geological heritage (beyond unique biodiversity) and enjoys international recognition.
