PRESS RELEASE Educational excursion of 2nd and 3rd year students of the Department of Geology, University of Patras in the Chelmos-Vouraikos UNESCO Global Geopark

The third year students of the Department of Geology of the University of Patras had the opportunity to visit important “Geotopes” of Chelmos-Vouraikos UNESCO Global Geopark, during a training excursion for the courses “Sedimentology”- “Stromatography” –“Tectonic” on Saturday 21 October 2017.

The Associate Professor of the Department of Geology, Georgios Iliopoulos and scientific collaborator of the Management Body of Chelmos-Vouraikos for Geopark issues, with his colleagues, the Associate Professor Paris Xipolias and Associate Professor Pavlos Avramidis, guided and informed the students about the geological and morphological features with exceptional value which they visited. Also they informed students about the new project of UNESCO with the title “UNESCO Global Geoparks”, in which Chelmos-Vouraikos National Park participates, due to its significant Geotopes, which are geological areas that have a special scientific, aesthetic, educational value but also archaeological, ecological, historical or cultural interest, such as the Cave of the Lakes, spring waters of Aroanios River in Planitero, the River of Vouraikos Gorge with the unique Odontotos rack railway Diakopto – Kalavrita, Tsivlou lake, Doxa lake etc.

On their way, they visited important Geotopes within Chelmos-Vouraikos UNESCO Global Geopark, like Gorge of Vouraikos River, tectonic structures in Olonos-Pindos Zone (region of Drymos, Lykouria), Feneos tectonic window and Doxa Lake (Mylonites).

Also, the second year students of the Department of Geology of the University of Patras, on Friday, November 3, 2017, guided to other important Geotopes of the Geopark at Kerinitsa, at the Cave of the Lakes at Kastria, at Tsivlou Lake, as well as at the tectonic structures of the Olonos-Pindos Zone (region of St. Nicholaos). Finally, a presentation about Chelmos-Vouraikos UNESCO Global Geopark and the actions of the Management Body took place by the scientific staff of the Management Body at the Information Center of its infrastructure at Kalavrita.

The Department of Geology of the University of Patras, arrange field trips every year, within the Chelmos-Vouraikos Global Geopark, as a monument of UNESCO.
