Participation of Management Body of Chelmos-Vouraikos in activities of May 2017

Management Body of Chelmos-Vouraikos participated this year during May 2017 in a number of activities and events to promote the “Chelmos-Vouraikos National Park” and “UNESCO Global Geopark”.

In the context of the events "EN SYRMO 2017- The art train", organized by the Municipality for Public Benefit of Aegialia, Management Body of Chelmos-Vouraikos had the opportunity to present “Chelmos-Vouraikos National Park” at the Information Center of its infrastructure to a group of students of the Athens School of Fine Arts who visited Vouraikos Gorge and Odontotos rack railway Diakopto – Kalavrita and inspired to create their works of art, in order to promote the route Diakopto - Kalavrita crossed by the railway. Also, within the context of the same institution, on Saturday, 27th of May 2017, Assistant Professor of Geology of the University of Patras and Special Associate of Chelmos-Vouraikos UNESCO Global Geopark, Dr. George Iliopoulos, presented important Geotopes of Chelmos-Vouraikos UNESCO Global Geopark and the importance of geo-routes for the local community, with the aim of attracting visitors to the area, thus concluding this year's events of "EN SYMMO" and renewing the appointment for May 2018.

On Friday, 12th of May, 2017, within the context of the 1st “Patras Science Festival”(May 10-13), which was hosted at the infrastructures of Hellenic Open University, in Patras, Management Body of Chelmos-Vouraikos presented the ecological value of the Protected Area with regard to the floristic richness, focusing mainly on the five exclusively endemic plants of Chelmos, and the only exclusive endemic plant of Vouraikos Gorge. Adults and children had the opportunity to discover the science behind every facet of their lives, discuss with scientists, experiment, play, participate in workshops, and attend interesting lectures and performances.

On Saturday, 20th of May, 2017, Descent of Vouraikos Gorge took place with a group members of the University of Patras and the Environmental Volunteer Group, with the support and continuous guidance of the staff members of the Management Body of Chelmos-Vouraikos. On the same day, at the Information Center of the Management Body of Chelmos-Vouraikos, Information presentations took place for Chelmos-Vouraikos National Park” and its important species of flora, as well as for the UNESCO World Geopark, by Ms. Eleni Koumoutsou, Project Coordinator, and Maria Tsakiri, Biologist and Special Associate of the Management Body of Chelmos-Vouraikos.

On 24th of May 2017, in the context of the celebration of the European Day of Parks, Eleni Koumoutsou, Project Coordinator of the Management Body of Chelmos-Vouraikos, presented important elements of the Chelmos-Vouraikos National Park on a show on the local TV channel "IONIAN CHANNEL". The National Park has been incorporated into the “Pan-European Federation of National Parks and Protected Areas”, and has been certified with the title "European Charter for Sustainable Tourism".

Finally, our region visited primary and secondary schools from all over Greece in the context of environmental education and the celebration of the “World Environment Day”, which is every year on 5th of June. Students were guided in the exhibition which is in the infrastructure of the Management Body and attended an interactive presentation of the National Park while being informed about the “Chelmos-Vouraikos National Park” and “UNESCO Global Geopark”. The Kastro-Keramidaki path, which is marked and includes important geotopes, gave the opportunity to students to experience the images and the sounds of their previous information.
