Global distinction for the protected area of Chelmos-Vouraikos National Park - Certification for sustainable tourism.

On December 7, 2016, the President of the Management Body of Chelmos Vouraikos, Mr. Gregoris Iatrou, with the Project Coordinator, Ms. Eleni Koumoutsou and the Deputy Mayor of Kalavryta, Mr. Nikolaos Magafas, received the award for Sustainable Tourism, which marks the integration of Chelmos-Vouraikos National Park and UNESCO Global Geopark in the “European Charter for Sustainable Tourism”. The award took place at the European Parliament in Brussels by Ms. Carol Ritchie, Executive Director of the Pan-European Federation of National Parks and Protected Areas (EUROPARC Federation). The certification for the "European Charter for Sustainable Tourism”, is valid for five years (2016-2020). It is an important tool for the promotion of the entire area which has been characterized as National Park and Geopark, but also for the local community ensuring that tourism contributes to a balanced economic, social and environmental development.

By this way, an opportunity is given to local agents and stakeholders, through participatory processes, to improve the tourism product, the promotion of the region, the certification of local products, etc., and furthermore to propose measures and solutions, taking into account the environmental protection, the proper use of natural resources, the needs of local residents, local businesses and visitors. In this context, the relevant memorandum of cooperation is signed between the Management Body of Chelmos-Vouraikos, Municipalities of Kalavryta and Aigialeia and those who involved in sustainable tourism development in the region (Kalavryta Ski Centre, Achaia Development Agency SA, Agricultural Dairy Cooperative of Kalavryta, Kalavrita Hotel Association, The Cave of the Lakes, Environmental Education Center of Akrata Kleitoria-Akrata, Tourism Committees of Municipalitis of Kalavryta and Aigialeia, Quality of Life Committees of Municipalities of Kalavryta and Aigialeia and the Kalavryta Mountaineering Association).

We look forward to a lasting partnership with the local government, developers and entrepreneurs of the region, but also with all users of the protected area, aiming to the maximum benefit of the local community.
