5 June 2018 - World Environment Day

During two days, 4-5 June, in the framework of the educational activities that carried out by the Primary School of Kalavryta, Chelmos-Vouraikos Management Body took an active role both with the provision of supporting material and with the presence of the Forest Protection Specialists.

Specifically, on Monday, June 4, the area around the Primary School of Kalavryta, with the help of the Kalavrita Police Department, was appropriately arranged as a traffic education park, with the aim of learning about the importance of road safety and road behavior, guided by their teachers. Chelmos-Vouraikos Management Body participated in this effort by the supply of seven mountain bikes and helmets.

Also, on Tuesday 5 June, the World Environment Day, with the presence of the Forest Protection Specialists of the Chelmos-Vouraikos Management Body, a guided tour of the educational path "Agios Ioannis-Keramidaki" carried out with students of the 4th and 5th grade of the primary school of Kalavrita and was organized for helping to meet and to be informed about the natural environment of the area.

Participation of Chelmos-Vouraikos Management Body in Events for May 2018

Chelmos-Vouraikos Management Body participated in a number of different activities and events this year within the framework of the European Geoparks Week, 6-20 May, with the aim of promoting the Chelmos-Vouraikos UNESCO Global Geopark.

In the framework of the events "EN SYRMO 2018 –Odontotos Festivities" from 27th of April to 31th of May, held by Municipality for Public Benefit of Aegialia, Chelmos-Vouraikos Management Body had the opportunity to present with an interactive presentation the Chelmos-Vouraikos National Park and UNESCO GlobalGeopark at the Information Center of its infrastructure addressed to students of various schools from the regions of Chios, Cyclades, Attica and Achaia.

On 8thof May, the Environmental Team of the Anthoussa Secondary School visited Chelmos-Vouraikos National Park and UNESCO Global Geopark within the framework of a school program entitled "Biodiversity - Biodiversity and threats that they receive" by guided tours withingeotopesof the Geopark.

On the 13th of May, the 38th Annual Crossing of Vouraikos Gorge was organized by the Association of Mountaineering - Skiing - Climbing and Environmental Protection of Kalavrita.

On 20thof May, a children's workshop "The Gorge of Inspiration" took place with events for children aged 6-12, with toys, paintings and actions of environmental interest by the Environmental Education Center of Klitoria-Akrata at the Zachlorou - Train Bridge, in the Vouraikos river gorge which inspired the great painter Yannis Spyropoulos.

1st International Conference, UNESCO Global Geoparks in Greece and Cyprus Geological heritage protection and management, education, tourism and sustainable development ATHENS 17-18 MAY 2018

The 1st International Conference of UNESCO Global Geoparks of Greece and Cyprus was held with great success and participation at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Kranidiotis Amphitheatre), on 17 and 18 May 2018.

WelcomeSpeech at the Opening of Conference was given by the President of the Hellenic National Commission for UNESCO, Mrs. Tzitzikosta and the Secretary of Cyprus National Commission for UNESCO.

Representatives from all Greek and Cyprus Geoparks, members of the Geological Survey Department of Cyprus, the Greek Institute of Geology and Mineral Exploration, representatives of Local Government, Ministries, Universities, Institutes and Organizations, as well as teachers of all grade levels, participated and presented their activities.

At the UNESCO Global Geopark of Chelmos - Vouraikos was presented by Professor G. Iatrou, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Chelmos-Vouraikos Management Body and the Assistant Professor G. Iliopoulos from the University of Patras

All the features, actions and good practices of Greek and Cyprus Geoparks, environmental education activities related to geo-diversity and geoparks, examples and innovative methodologies for the promotion of local products, promotion of geo-tourism and support for sustainable local development were presented at the conference, while the geopark features, the eligibility criteria and the process of drafting and submitting a dossier for the identification of an area as a GlobalGeopark UNESCO were thoroughly analyzed.

At the closing of the conference, a round table was held with the subject "Management of Geo-diversity and the Global Geoparks of UNESCO", with the participation of representatives of the Ministries of Environment, Energy and Culture, the Hellenic Parliament, the Greek Ombudsman, the Geological Survey Department of Cyprus, the Greek Institute of Geology and Mineral Exploration, the Hellenic Geological Society, the President of the UNESCO GloabalGeoparks and several others.

The papers and the results of the conference will be posted at the website of the Hellenic Geoparks Forum. At the closing of the conferencewere announced the dates of the next conference of UNESCO Global Geoparks in Greece and Cyprus, to be held in Cyprus on 16 and 17 May 2019.

The Hellenic Geoparks Forum and the Greek Geoparks are warmly glad to thank the Hellenic National Commission for UNESCO and the sponsors and supporters of the Organizing Committee, namely the Regions of Crete and Epirus, the Chelmos-Vouraikos Management Body, AKOMM-Psiloritis Development Agency SA, the Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest and Hellenic Petroleum SA.

Participation of Chelmos-Vouraikos UNESCO Global Geopark

at the 41st European Geopark Network Coordination Committee Meeting, in Austria

 

                    Chelmos-Vouraikos UNESCO Global Geopark, with its two representatives, Mrs Koumoutsou Eleni, Project Co-ordinator and Mr. Iliopoulos Georgios, Assistant Professor of the Department of Geology of the University of Patras and Scientific Associate of the Geopark, participated in the 41st European Geopark Network Coordination Committee Meeting, which took place at the Karawanken-Karavanke UNESCO Global Geopark, on March 19-24, 2018, in Austria.

The meeting was attended by representatives of 71 Geoparks of 23 European countries. In Greece there are 5 regions (Lesvos Island, Psiloritis, Chelmos-Vouraikos, Vikos-Aoos, Sitia) and the Geopark of Cyprus (Troodos) that belong to the European Geopark Network and at the same time are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

In this meeting discussed issues common to all members of the Network, including proposals for transnational partnerships of EU Programmes for funding projects and activities in Geopark sites.

                    On the 2nd day an open press conference was held with many journalists and a local Products Exhibition took place by all Geoparks so that the participants could be informed and taste flavors from many parts of Europe. In this exhibition there was a Greek kiosk with flavors and pictures from Achaia, Lesvos, Ioannina and Crete.

Chelmos-Vouraikos Management Body contributes to the promotion of alternative tourism, environmental education, protection and promotion of environment in the area of the National Park, with multiple benefits for the local community. This establishes the recognition of the Chelmos-Vouraikos National Park as an UNESCO World Heritage site with a special geological heritage (beyond unique biodiversity) and enjoys international recognition.

Information Meeting related to the Programme entitled “UNESCO Global Geoparks”

A meeting with representatives of the Regions and Municipalities was held by the Hellenic National Commission for UNESCO, on Wednesday 29 November at the Hellenic Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Athens. The purpose of the meeting was to inform the relevant bodies about the progress of the Programme entitled “UNESCO Global Geoparks”, as well as to identify any problems and better coordinate the actions of involved bodies.

The meeting was attended by the President of the Hellenic National Committee for UNESCO Mrs. Aikaterini Tzitzikosta, the President of the Hellenic Committee of UNESCO Geoparks, Professor Nikolaos Zouros, the Regional Governor of Epirus Mr Alexandros Kachrimanis, the Deputy Regional Governor of Epirus Mrs Panagiota Mitrokosta, the Deputy Regional Governor of Western Greece Mr. Nikolaos Balabanis, the Mayor of Kalavryta Mr. Georgios Lazouras and representatives from the 5 UNESCO Geoparks located in the Greek territory.

During the meeting, the speakers were given the opportunity to develop their concerns and to exchange ideas and practices for the promotion of the country's natural heritage and the economic development of Greek countryside areas with exceptional geological heritage, especially in mountainous and island regions.

It was finally decided to organize a Conference for UNESCO Global Geoparks both of Greece and Cyprus on 10 and 11 May 2018 in Athens.

Educational excursion of students of the Department of Geography, University of Aegean, in the Chelmos-Vouraikos UNESCO Global Geopark

Students of the Department of Geography, University of Aegean, had the opportunity to visit Chelmos-Vouraikos National Park on Monday, 20 November 2017, accompanied by the Professor Nikolaos Zouros, the President of the Hellenic Committee of UNESCO Geoparks. The Project Coordinator of the Management Body, Mrs Koumoutsou Eleni, with the scientific staff greet the students at Gorge of Vouraikos River and at the infrastructures of the Management Body of Chelmos –Vouraikos, at Kalavryta. A debate was held with main subject the natural heritage and biodiversity of the region declaired “UNESCO Global Geopark”. The visit at Kalavrita was completed by the ascent to the Holocaust Monument. The visit was carried out in the framework of an environmental education program of Chelmos-Vouraikos Management Body and the networking of the UNESCO Global Geoparks in Greece.

PRESS RELEASE Educational excursion of 2nd and 3rd year students of the Department of Geology, University of Patras in the Chelmos-Vouraikos UNESCO Global Geopark

The third year students of the Department of Geology of the University of Patras had the opportunity to visit important “Geotopes” of Chelmos-Vouraikos UNESCO Global Geopark, during a training excursion for the courses “Sedimentology”- “Stromatography” –“Tectonic” on Saturday 21 October 2017.

The Associate Professor of the Department of Geology, Georgios Iliopoulos and scientific collaborator of the Management Body of Chelmos-Vouraikos for Geopark issues, with his colleagues, the Associate Professor Paris Xipolias and Associate Professor Pavlos Avramidis, guided and informed the students about the geological and morphological features with exceptional value which they visited. Also they informed students about the new project of UNESCO with the title “UNESCO Global Geoparks”, in which Chelmos-Vouraikos National Park participates, due to its significant Geotopes, which are geological areas that have a special scientific, aesthetic, educational value but also archaeological, ecological, historical or cultural interest, such as the Cave of the Lakes, spring waters of Aroanios River in Planitero, the River of Vouraikos Gorge with the unique Odontotos rack railway Diakopto – Kalavrita, Tsivlou lake, Doxa lake etc.

On their way, they visited important Geotopes within Chelmos-Vouraikos UNESCO Global Geopark, like Gorge of Vouraikos River, tectonic structures in Olonos-Pindos Zone (region of Drymos, Lykouria), Feneos tectonic window and Doxa Lake (Mylonites).

Also, the second year students of the Department of Geology of the University of Patras, on Friday, November 3, 2017, guided to other important Geotopes of the Geopark at Kerinitsa, at the Cave of the Lakes at Kastria, at Tsivlou Lake, as well as at the tectonic structures of the Olonos-Pindos Zone (region of St. Nicholaos). Finally, a presentation about Chelmos-Vouraikos UNESCO Global Geopark and the actions of the Management Body took place by the scientific staff of the Management Body at the Information Center of its infrastructure at Kalavrita.

The Department of Geology of the University of Patras, arrange field trips every year, within the Chelmos-Vouraikos Global Geopark, as a monument of UNESCO.

Participation of Chelmos-Vouraikos Management Body in Information and Awareness Actions.

Chelmos-Vouraikos Management Body participated in awareness raising actions on Saturday, September 9, 2017. About 40 members of the Hellenic
Society for the Protection of Nature visited Chelmos-Vouraikos National Park and more specifically they walked around Tsivlou Lake and were guided by
forest protection experts, staff of the Management Body, on the waymarked Trail of Valvousi-Keramidaki of the Protected Area.

On the afternoon of the same day, they visited the Information Center of Chelmos-Vouraikos Management Body and they attended a presentation by the
Project Coordinator of the Management Body, Ms. Eleni Koumoutsou, as regards the actions and work of the Management Body, as well as the
importance of Chelmos-Vouraikos UNESCO Global Geopark for the local community. Also, a presentation related with the actions of the Environmental
Education Centre of Kleitoria-Akrata was carried out by Charilaos Moschopoulos, Manager of the Environmental Education Centre of Kleitoria - Akrata.

2nd Environmental and Sports Meeting of Lake Tsivlou

Aigialeia Municipality with the collaboration of the Management Body of Chelmos- Vouraikos, in October 2017, organized the Environmental and Athletic Meeting at
Tsivlos Lake (38 ° 4601'N - 22 ° 13.953'E) in Greece. The Geopark of Chelmos-Vouraikos and the Environmental Education Centre of
Kleitoria-Akrata guided the participants informing them about the ecological interest of the area.

The members of the Pedagogy Team of the Environmental Education Centre of Kleitoria - Akrata carried out activities with environmental laboratories and games
for children.  The Road Race - Round of Tsivlou Lake (10 km for adults and two road races 5.5 km and 2 km for children) had a great participation while the audience participated
in archery lessons, kayaking, rafting and two-person inflatable kayaks, flying fox, and exhibitions with local products, traditional recipes and products of local gastronomy.
