Assistantships

Chelmos-Vouraikos Management Body, gives the possibility to students of various Higher Education Institutions as well as students of Vocational Training Institutes of Post-Secondary Education, with a field related to the actions and responsibilities of the Management Body, from all over Greece to express their interest in an Assistantship position. The Achievement of Assistantship was carried out for the first time in 2018 by a student of the Department of Biology and a student from the Department of Geology of the University of Patras.

Exhibition- Guided Tours

On the first floor of the building of Chelmos-Vouraikos Management Body, at 35 Agiou Alexiou Street in Kalavryta, there is a visiting exhibition with rich photographic material from the Protected Area.

Here visitors are informed about the Protected Area. They are informed of the history, geography, fauna, flora, rare and protected species and their legal status, the population and social features of the area, its monuments and natural beauty, as well as the difficulties in relation to its management and its rational and sustainable development.

Also, the hall is well-equipped to make presentations or lectures for young and adult visitors. The Exhibition was created within the framework of the Operational Program "Environment" 2000-2006, Measure 8.1 "Protection and Management of Biotopes-Habitats-Protection Areas of Special Natural Beauty", aiming at the promotion of the Chelmos-Vouraikos National Park.

Chelmos-Vouraikos Management Body hosts, upon request, pre-primary, primary and secondary school students, university students, various other groups and adults. Guided tours include presentations and information of the public for the natural and cultural richness of the Protected Area at the Information Center of the Management Body and a visit to nature accompanied by Forest Protection Specialists, who are part of the staff of the Management Body. The aim is to participate in actions aiming to bring young and elder people close to nature and to meet the richness and exceptional value of the flora and fauna of our country and especially within the Protected Area of Chelmos-Vouraikos Management Body

Studies- Management Projects

The main studies and projects implemented for the protection and management of the protected area of Chelmos - Vouraikos National Park are the following:

1. Management Planning of the Protected Area of Chelmos - Vouraikos Management Body.

The general purpose of the Management Planning of Chelmos - Vouraikos National Park is to evermore protect, conserve and manage the nature and the natural landscape as a natural heritage and valuable national natural resource in the land and aquatic zones of the Special Area of Conservation "Mount Chelmos and Styx Waters" (GR2320002 ), "Vouraikos Gorge" (GR2320003) and "Aesthetic Forest of Kalavrita" (GR2320004), as defined in Directive 92/43/ EEC and under the project "Identifying and describing habitat types in areas of interest for the conservation of nature"(Ministry of Environment, Physical Planning and Public Works, 2001) and the project "Guidelines for the implementation of Protected Area Management Plans " (Greek Biotope/Wetland Centre and Ministry of Environment, Physical Planning and Public Works, Kakuro, et all., 2004), distinguished for their great biological, ecological, aesthetic, scientific, geomorphological and educative value.

2. Recording of flora and habitat types of Chelmos - Vouraikos National Park.

The inventory of flora and habitat types within the boundaries of the Chelmos - Vouraikos National Park has resulted in the integrated knowledge of the Protected Area of Chelmos - Vouraikos Management Body and has been the tool for the Scientific staff of the Management Body for the Conservation of Biodiversity through implementation of documented sustainable management methods, an integral tool of which is monitoring. The action plan of the flora and habitat types recording was carried out by the Office for Business Planning in collaboration with the Contractor, which resulted from a contest, which was also undertaken by the Office of Business Planning (Geologist, Forestry, Environmental Co-ordinator, Biologist).

3. Recording water resources of Chelmos - Vouraikos National Park and promotion of the region's geo-diversity.

 

4. Assignment of nature conservation expert for drafting a Presidential Decree.

 

5. Special Study of Sustainable Grazing & Grazing capacity of Chelmos-Vouraikos National Park.

 

6. Integration of the Protected Area into the European Geopark Network (EGN) and the Global Geopark Network (GGN) under UNESCO (2009) and recognition of the site as UNESCO Global Geopark (2015).

 

7. Design and implementation of new educational programs for the Protected Area and the Geoparks.

The implementation is carried out in close cooperation with the Environmental Education Center of Klitoria -Akrata


8. Vehicle Tracking System of Management Body’s vehicles during guarding.

Continuous on-line monitoring of the guarding of the National Park

 

9. Creation of the management body website, with constanly updating data.


10. Global recognition for the protected area of the Chelmos-Vouraikos National Park - Certification for sustainable tourism.

On December 7, 2016, the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Chelmos-Vouraikos, Dr. Gregorios Iatrou, with the Project Coordinator, Eleni Koumoutsou and the Assistant Mayor of Kalavryta, Mr. Nikolaos Mangafas, received the Sustainable Tourism Award, which marks the integration of Chelmos-Vouraikos National Park and UNESCO Global Geopark in the "European Charter for Sustainable Tourism". The award took place in the European Parliament in Brussels by Ms. Carol Ritchie, Director of the Paneuropean Federation of National Parks and Protected Areas (EUROPARC FEDERATION). Certification for the "European Charter for Sustainable Tourism" has a five-year validity (2016-2020). It is an important tool for the promotion of the entire area that has been designated as National Park and UNESCO Global Geopark, but also for the local community, ensuring that tourism contributes to balanced economic, social and environmental development.

Biodiversity Monitoring Program

The monitoring of habitat types and species of flora, fauna and bird fauna of the EU Directives 92/43 and 79/409 in the area of responsibility of Chelmos-Vouraikos Management Body started in early 2010 as part of the Operational Programme "Environment & Sustainable Development" for the period 2007-2013 ", one of the NSRF Programmes for Greece, co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund.

After the end of the programme in 2015, monitoring is continued by the staff of the Managing Body.

The purpose of the implementation of the monitoring programme of habitat types and species of flora, fauna and bird fauna of the EU Directives 92/43 and 79/409 was to investigate the presence, monitoring and evaluation of the conservation status:

1. of all habitat types in Annex I of Directive 92/43/EEC, which are within the area of responsibility of the Management Body,

2. of the plant species Globularia stygia Orph. exBoiss. of Annex II to Directive 92/43/EEC within the area of responsibility of the Management Body,.

3. of the local endemic and Greek endemic plants occurring within the area of responsibility of the Management Body (Polygala subuniflora Boiss. &Heldr., Alchemilla aroanica (Buser) Rothm., Campanula aizoon subsp. aizoides (Greuter) Fedorov, Campanula asperuloides (Boiss. &Orph.) Engler, Bolanthus chelmicus Phitos subsp. chelmicus, Dianthus mercurii Heldr., Lonicera alpigera L. subsp. hellenica (Boiss.) Kit Tan & Zielinski, Valeriana crinii Orph. ex Boiss. subsp. crinii, Corydalis blanda Schott subsp. oxelmannii Liden, Geocaryum divaricatum (Boiss. &Orph.) Engstrand, Cicer graecum Orph. ex Boiss., Silene conglomeratica Melzh., Ophrys diakoptensis Bayer, Peucedanum achaicum Halacsy),

4. of amphibians and reptiles of Community Interest and those of exceptional interest (i.e. Balkan endemic, Greek or local endemic, protected by international or national legislation), which occur within the area of responsibility of the Management Body,

5. of mammals of Community Interest and those of exceptional interest (i.e. Balkan endemic, Greek or local endemic, protected by international or national legislation), which occur within the area of responsibility of the Management Body,

6. of invertebrates: lepidoptera, coleoptera, odonata, orthoptera, isopods, arachnids and terrestrial molluscs of Community Interest and those of exceptional interest (i.e. Balkan endemic, Greek or local endemic, protected by international or national legislation), which occur within the area of responsibility of the Management Body,

7. Freshwater fish of Community Interest and those of particular interest (endemic to the Balkan Peninsula, or locally endemic, protected by international treaties or national legislation) occurring in the Management Authority Liability Area.

8. endemic, rare and endangered bird species, and in particular those of Community Interest, of Directive 79/409 / EEC on the conservation of wild birds in the Protected Area of the Chelmos-Vouraikos National Park.

One of the main responsibilities of the Management Body is to provide advisories prior to the Spatial Location Pre-approval and the approval of environmental conditions of projects and activities within its area of responsibility (as defined in paragraph 2c of article 15 of Law 2742/1999 as amended by with paragraph 3 of article 7 of Law 3937/2011 - Biodiversity Conservation and other provisions), as well as other issues for which the competent authorities are consulted. Each project and activity carried out within the area of responsibility of the Management Body, must be in agreement with the Board of Directors. of the Management Body, which decides.
