What is the Geopark

The management Body of Chelmos-Vouraikos became a member of the European Geoparks Network (EGN) and the Global Geoparks Network (GGN) under the supervision of UNESCO in 2009, with the purpose of promoting alternative tourism such as geotourism and conserving and enhancing the geological heritage. The protected area includes geological regions with special scientific, aesthetic and educational value as well as archeological, ecological, historical and cultural interest.
A European Geopark is a territory with a geological heritage of European significance and with a sustainable development strategy with a strong management structure, often supported by a European funding programme, to aid further development.
Because visitors/tourists are more aware of, and interested in, the protection of the natural, historical, cultural and social environment, it will be increasingly important to inform tourists and tour operators, through site interpretation and promotional activities, of the efforts that management is making to maintain the site. Towards this effort the Management Body of Chelmos – Vouraikos has been intensively working on proposals and projects.
Numerous interpretation panels have been placed within the Geopark territory and more are being placed continuously. These panels refer to and link ecological, biological and geological important sites of the area. In this way the visitor will have the opportunity to receive and learn important information in situ, transforming the scenery into an outdoor school.
